Destination Wedding Checklist

It can be overwhelming for any bride to plan her special day especially when it is a destination wedding. It is essential that you have the best advice and resources at your fingertips. This destination wedding checklist will help make your planning process a breeze.

Visit Your Destination Wedding Guide to print the checklist in a handy format or download for your use and modification. Happy planning!

11-12 Months Prior

This is a good time to set your budget, purchase a planner or decide to use a professional, choose your destination and start collecting ideas. It is a good idea to get or renew your passport if needed. Also, once you’ve narrowed down a few choices consider taking a trip to visit your top location. Work with the location to set a date for your big day.

9-10 Months Prior

Compile a guest list and decide on the size of your wedding. Send out cards to announce your engagement with the planned date available for everyone to begin planning ahead. Start to contact and set appointments with necessary vendors that you may be bringing with you to your destination. Give your guests some details or options regarding on-location lodging and local activities they can be involved in when they’re there. Research the ins and outs regarding getting your marriage license. Each destination will be different. Also, begin to plan your own travel plans.

Visit Your Destination Wedding Guide to print the checklist in a handy format or download for your use and modification.

7-8 Months Prior

Shop for your dress, decide on invitations, register for gifts and choose your wedding party’s attire. This is also a good time to shop for rings and place any orders that you may need. Begin designing the theme and colors that you want to use during the ceremony and reception. A good cost-reducing hint is to use colors and a theme already presented by your destination.

5-6 Months Prior

Order your cake, flowers, décor and finalize your menu for the reception. Also, make any decisions regarding your ceremony events. Make sure you have everyone involved scheduled. Begin setting plans for the rehearsal, rehearsal dinner and any other events you may want to have.

3-4 Months Prior

Send out invitations, compile welcome bags, designate who will be packing or shipping décor and favors, and confirm details with your vendors. Make sure your bridal party has their travel plans set and everyone has ordered or been fitted for their attire.

Visit Your Destination Wedding Guide to print the checklist in a handy format or download for your use and modification.

1-2 Months Prior

Decide on seating for the reception and the itinerary of events during the time your are there. Communicate with your guests and confirm any lodging details. Get your final fitting for your dress and schedule a date to pick it up.

2-4 Weeks Prior

Finalize details with vendors if necessary, set any last minute health and beauty appointments, begin packing and confirm your travel arrangements.

Upon Arrival

Meet up with your destination wedding coordinator or manager, discuss ceremony details with the officiant, schedule a steaming for your dress, distribute the welcome bags, confirm plans for all activities and stylist appointments and make sure all details have been taken care of with your marriage license. Then sit back, take a long bubble bath and relax!

Good creative destination wedding planning can make the difference between an ordinary wedding and one that will remain in the memory of you and your new husband for ever.

If you have decided on a destination wedding, rather than being conventional and getting married in your home town or city, there is a lot that can go wrong and spoil the day. Not only that, but unless you are blessed with unlimited funds, it will be a wedding that is attended by relatively few guests and so a little creativity can go a long way towards making it a memorable occasion for them also.

Not everybody you would like to be there will be there, and creative planning is also necessary to handle that situation. Who do you invite, and not invite. If you invite everybody to that Paris wedding you have always promised yourself, you could be thought of as making invitations in order to receive gifts from as many as possible. If you fail to do so, then those not invited might feel slighted. This situation can be overcome diplomatically, but it takes creativity and good planning.

There are several steps involved in planning a destination wedding starting with that invitation list that is your first hurdle. You should inform everybody that you are planning a wedding outside your home town, whether it is in another county or state, depending on where you live, or even in another country. Popular destinations are the Paris previously mentioned, the Caribbean, several destinations in the USA, UK and Europe and cruise liners are becoming increasingly popular.

Some couples take the approach of asking friends and relatives if they would be able to attend such a wedding were it to be held, as a preliminary to drawing up a guest list. Others simply ask their parents, plus best friends as matron of honor or chief bridesmaid, and best man, and offer to pay their expenses if they are able to. You should never invite your friends to your wedding in an official capacity unless you know that money is not a problem to them, or you are able to offer to pay their costs. Many couples can pick up part of the tab, and provide their guests with a great few days, but for many more that is not possible.

Many couples have their dream wedding in the exotic location of their choice by themselves, and then have a blessing in their home church or chapel, followed by a full reception for their family and friends. That is creative destination wedding planning at its best for the ordinary couple that can afford their dream wedding and honeymoon, but are unable to pay the traveling and accommodation expenses of their guests. You should not deny yourself your dream just to keep others happy. A little imagination can formulate a way for you to have what you want and also provide your family and friends with what they want.

That is how your creativity can resolve one of the most difficult aspects of any destination wedding: how to keep everybody happy, including yourselves. The next planning stage is to get the actual venues booked. It is one thing deciding that you want married in a specific location, but another in organizing that. Creative planning will likely conclude that you need to hire somebody in the actual destination to handle the organizing at that end, although it is possible for you to handle it yourself.

For that you will need good communication with the local authorities of the town or city in which you intend to be married, so that you are aware of any legal restrictions such as whether or not you need a local marriage license, any local readings of Marriage Banns that vary throughout the Western world, any residential qualifications, blood tests and doctor’s certificates that might be required.

You will also need effective communication with the venues of your ceremony and reception, and also the accommodation of any guests. If you are planning to me married by yourselves, without guests until your reception back home, you will have to arrange a minister or judge for the ceremony, and probably the requisite number of witnesses. Many resorts or other destinations offer a complete package, including witnesses, a cake, photographer and champagne for the couple, including accommodation and even honeymoon facilities if needed.

That is why many opt to hire a wedding planner to look after all of this for them, so that you need only tend to your end of things. After all, there is little to plan once the invitations or home reception, destination venues and ceremony legalities, travel details and the honeymoon have been looked after.

Creative destination wedding planning can be used to give you the fabulous unforgettable wedding that you want, and also to keep all of your family and friends happy whether they can be with you or not. Forward planning is the crux, and whether or not you use the services of professionals to help with it is immaterial. It is the end result of your planning that counts. It is your wedding, and if you and your new husband are happy with your planning, then that is all that matters.

Looking for a great vacation destination this year? There are several hot ones around the world that are luring new visitors as well as repeat vacationers. Why not try a new destination for your next vacation?

Thailand is a great international destination that suffered greatly after the big tsunami, but it is back and thriving! Since the number of tourist has drastically gone down, prices are better than ever and the beaches won’t be as crowded. Thailand is full of fascinating culture and great food, plus it is super economical!

Japan is another Asian hot spot. It might surprise you to learn that this hard-working country features some of the best ski slopes in the world! But that’s why they have twice been the location of the Winter Olympics. They are attracting ski buffs everywhere and rapidly becoming a popular place to vacation. For spouses who aren’t interested in snow and cold, there is hot springs to relax in.

London is the perfect place for party animals. The city features world-famous night clubs that go all night long, as well as some great historical sights if you aren’t too hung over the next morning! This British destination is also home to some of the world’s best restaurants as well. The great thing is that you can almost always find incredible discounts to fly to England.

Athens is yet another famous destination if you enjoy night life, on a more relaxed level. Greece has a lot to offer besides clubs and pubs, so even if you prefer history over drinking, you will be right at home. Try renting a motor scooter to tour the countryside and enjoy the amazing food that Greece has to offer, along with the historical sites.

Mexico has always been a hot destination for tourists looking for some heat. These days, Cancun is the place to be. Featuring stereotypical white sandy beaches, perfect blue water and a variety of water activities like swimming and jet skiing, this resort town is Mexico bumped up a notch. Since it is so close to the US, if you are American, you can travel easily enough by plane or car, for a decent price.

Italy is another European destination that has become popular after the incredible fame of Dan Brown’s books “The DaVinci Code” and “Angels and Demons”. Set in Rome, the books and resulting movie have peaked an interest in this religious city. The ruins and historical value of this country is astounding and well worth a visit. It can be romantic whether you travel alone or with a partner.

Our last international hot spot destination is Brazil. This South American country is best known for its shameless beaches featuring topless women, but it offers a lot more! There is a wild nightlife for those who like to party and a very strong mixed culture that features foods with influences from around the world. You can also check out the Amazon River and go for a hike into the rainforest.

International destinations are in right now and it is the moment to take advantage. Book your airplane tickets ahead of time to avoid problems and to get the lowest fares possible, pack some sunscreen, and enjoy!

If you are looking for an exotic location to enjoy a late summer getaway, or perhaps an autumn break, then you could do a lot worse than go to the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean.

The island was named as “hot for 2007″ by the Association of British Travel Agents’ (ABTA) members, and this year alone, bookings have increased by nine per cent for the destination.

ABTA’s Frances Tuke said: “The all-inclusive packages in particular have been a massive hit for families who know they have to stick to a budget as everything is paid for upfront, but the destination also offers so much more for the British holidaymaker.

“Not only are there fantastic beaches and watersports on offer, but if you want to get away from the crowds, there is breathtaking scenery in the form of rainforests, mountains and waterfalls. The cities also offer a vibrant culture that has a Spanish colonial past.”

The Dominican Republic is the second largest island in the Caribbean. It has the highest point in the West Indies, the Pick Duarte standing tall at 10,414ft, and also the lowest point in the West Indies, Lake Enriquillo which is 148 ft below sea level.

Christopher Columbus first stepped ashore the island, which he called Hispaniola, in 1492. Consequently, the south side of the island boasts the oldest city of the New World, including the first hospital, first sugar mill, and first cathedral.

The capital city, Santo Domingo has Columbus’ Palace, the Alcazar de Colon, the 22-room home of Don Diego Columbus and his family. It was built in 1510, and then underwent restoration in 1955, a wonderful mix of Gothic and Moorish architecture.

The capital also has a buzzing street life, which is quite unique. The streets are awash with colour and music, the finest example of which occurs during the Domincan Carnival that takes place between February and March.

The second largest city on the island is found on the cliffs above the Yaque River, called Santiago de los Caballeros or simply Santiago, but it is the island’s next largest city, Puerto Plata, located on the north shore of the island which has become the most popular tourist destination. Nearby Sosua, La Romana and Punta Cana to the east of the island also have a growing resort population.

The Dominican Republic also has some stunning landscapes, with much of the island covered in mountainous terrain. There is plenty for nature lovers to explore, from semi-desert plains to green valleys and tropical rain forests.

There is also the Cordillera Septentrional mountain range, which runs between the Atlantic coast and the Cibao valley. It was here that Spaniards used to search for gold. The Cibao Valley is also famous for growing, harvesting and marketing tobacco, and its cigars are an important income for the island. It is easy to arrange trips to soak up this nature from most of the island’s tourist centres.

But for many, the number one thing to do on holiday is hit the beach, top up the tan and relax. You will have no problem doing that in the Dominican Republic. With its characteristic laid-back Caribbean style, the island has approximately 400km of beaches to enjoy.

With first class All Inclusive hotels such as the Bahia Principe and the Riu Bachata it’s the ideal place for an All Inclusive holiday.

Package deals can be found for most of the white sandy beaches along the country’s northern shores, with the between Puerto Plata and Cabarete proving to long-standing popular places with sunseekers.

Unsurprisingly, the watersports are excellent as well. Snorkelling, sailing and scuba-diving can be enjoyed in the unspoilt water along the coast, or you could indulge in deep-sea fishing or championship golf along the north coast of Playa Grande.
