The Dominican Republic Is An Exotic Caribbean Destination

If you are looking for an exotic location to enjoy a late summer getaway, or perhaps an autumn break, then you could do a lot worse than go to the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean.

The island was named as “hot for 2007″ by the Association of British Travel Agents’ (ABTA) members, and this year alone, bookings have increased by nine per cent for the destination.

ABTA’s Frances Tuke said: “The all-inclusive packages in particular have been a massive hit for families who know they have to stick to a budget as everything is paid for upfront, but the destination also offers so much more for the British holidaymaker.

“Not only are there fantastic beaches and watersports on offer, but if you want to get away from the crowds, there is breathtaking scenery in the form of rainforests, mountains and waterfalls. The cities also offer a vibrant culture that has a Spanish colonial past.”

The Dominican Republic is the second largest island in the Caribbean. It has the highest point in the West Indies, the Pick Duarte standing tall at 10,414ft, and also the lowest point in the West Indies, Lake Enriquillo which is 148 ft below sea level.

Christopher Columbus first stepped ashore the island, which he called Hispaniola, in 1492. Consequently, the south side of the island boasts the oldest city of the New World, including the first hospital, first sugar mill, and first cathedral.

The capital city, Santo Domingo has Columbus’ Palace, the Alcazar de Colon, the 22-room home of Don Diego Columbus and his family. It was built in 1510, and then underwent restoration in 1955, a wonderful mix of Gothic and Moorish architecture.

The capital also has a buzzing street life, which is quite unique. The streets are awash with colour and music, the finest example of which occurs during the Domincan Carnival that takes place between February and March.

The second largest city on the island is found on the cliffs above the Yaque River, called Santiago de los Caballeros or simply Santiago, but it is the island’s next largest city, Puerto Plata, located on the north shore of the island which has become the most popular tourist destination. Nearby Sosua, La Romana and Punta Cana to the east of the island also have a growing resort population.

The Dominican Republic also has some stunning landscapes, with much of the island covered in mountainous terrain. There is plenty for nature lovers to explore, from semi-desert plains to green valleys and tropical rain forests.

There is also the Cordillera Septentrional mountain range, which runs between the Atlantic coast and the Cibao valley. It was here that Spaniards used to search for gold. The Cibao Valley is also famous for growing, harvesting and marketing tobacco, and its cigars are an important income for the island. It is easy to arrange trips to soak up this nature from most of the island’s tourist centres.

But for many, the number one thing to do on holiday is hit the beach, top up the tan and relax. You will have no problem doing that in the Dominican Republic. With its characteristic laid-back Caribbean style, the island has approximately 400km of beaches to enjoy.

With first class All Inclusive hotels such as the Bahia Principe and the Riu Bachata it’s the ideal place for an All Inclusive holiday.

Package deals can be found for most of the white sandy beaches along the country’s northern shores, with the between Puerto Plata and Cabarete proving to long-standing popular places with sunseekers.

Unsurprisingly, the watersports are excellent as well. Snorkelling, sailing and scuba-diving can be enjoyed in the unspoilt water along the coast, or you could indulge in deep-sea fishing or championship golf along the north coast of Playa Grande.

Caribbean Destination Wedding Planning Tips

Have you decided that you want a Caribbean destination wedding, as opposed to a wedding at home? If so, you will need to make many plans. To get started, please continue reading on for a few helpful destination wedding planning tips.

Research your options. Before deciding on a destination wedding in the Caribbean, it is important to research. Of course, find affordable airline reservations and overnight accommodations, but look beyond that. For example, some all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica give you a free standard wedding ceremony. In most cases, very few restrictions are involved, such as a 5 or 7 day stay.

Make wedding plans. As previously stated, some all-inclusive Jamaica resorts give you a free wedding. If you opt for these resorts, be sure to make your plans in advance and ensure you get a picture perfect wedding, even if it is free. If you opt for a separate wedding venue, make these plans well in advance and keep up-to-date on progress and changes.

Reexamine your decision. Make sure you are making the right choice. If you change your mind, you can still use your Caribbean reservations for your honeymoon. You may, however, run into problems with guests. For that reason, reaffirm your decision to get married in the Caribbean before telling friends and family.

Tell your family. As soon as you decide on a destination wedding, tell your family. Do you have a mother who is excited about your engagement and wants to help you plan? If so, she may get started right away. Don’t give her the opportunity to be disappointed. When telling your family, know ahead of time if you want to invite guests.

Decide on a date. When deciding on a wedding date, give time. Most of your guests will want to attend, but some may need to save money first. If you want someone special to attend, such as a best friend, give them word of your plans before the official invite arrives in the mail. Also, make sure you and all guests have time to order and receive passports.

Make your travel plans. Once you decide on a date, it is important to check availability. With a large selection of Caribbean resorts to choose from, you should not have a problem getting a reservation. With that said, if you opt for a resort with a free wedding included, double check availability before providing guests with a specific date.

Decide who to invite. When planning a Caribbean wedding, you will face a tough decision in terms of guests. Who do you want to invite? Most want to keep their destination weddings small. Also, consider finances, but fairness. Not sending an invite to one aunt, but the rest because you assume she cannot afford is tricky. Send the invite and let her decide.

Inform guests. You will want to tell immediate family members in person first, but everyone else can receive a destination wedding invitation. As previously stated, destination wedding invitations should be sent at least two months in advance.

Order invitations. For the invitations themselves, you can use a standard wedding invitation or opt for a theme. Most online and local retailers have a large selection of destination wedding invitations available for sale. Announce your wedding plans with a beautiful beach scenery in the background.

Include travel information. In addition to a destination wedding invite, you should include other information. Although optional, consider giving guests information on travel. If you already booked your travel arrangements or researched options, you may know what airline reservations and Caribbean resorts have the best deals. Share this with your guests, as they will appreciate the tips.

Consider your plans. When extending Caribbean all-inclusive resort recommendations, keep your travel plans in mind. Most guests will not just travel for your wedding and leave; they will stay and have a vacation themselves. If you intend to honeymoon too, opt for a nearby hotel or resort. You want to enjoy your honeymoon, not turn around and see a family member every step you take.

Discuss at-home plans with family. Whether you have a number of guests that cannot attend your Caribbean wedding or if you don’t want to invite guests, discuss arrangements at home with your family. With Caribbean weddings, some couples do not get a big reception, but that is something that can be done later at home.

Top Caribbean Beach Destinations

The Caribbean is one of the most popular destinations for vacationers from around the world. From the many independent islands to the coasts of Mexico and Central America, there are a wide variety of choices for travelers to choose between when planning their beach vacations. Among the options, however, are some gems that you should consider when making your travel plans.

Beach Destination # 1: Barbados

Barbados was once an English colony but is now a thriving independent nation. Located in the southern Caribbean, nearby islands include Trinidad and Tobago as well as St. Lucia. Because of the upscale air the island exudes, Barbados is considered a prime choice for honeymooners. Travelers can find everything from simple motels to all-inclusive resorts to timeshare condos when they book travel to Barbados. With a dry and temperate climate, Barbados is also known for its white sand beaches and the abundance of water sports made possible by the terrific waves of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.

Beach Destination # 2: The U.S. Virgin Islands

If you want to plan the ideal Caribbean beach vacation without even technically leaving the United States, then the U.S. Virgin Islands is the perfect destination. Three islands comprise the U.S. Virgin Islands. They are St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. The smaller Water Island is also a part of the U.S. Virgin Islands. All part of the same territory, each island offers its own unique destinations and amenities. The U.S. Virgin islands are located just to the east of Puerto Rico.

St. Thomas is home to the famous Blackbeard’s Castle. Although it is unknown if the pirate known as Blackbeard ever visited St. Thomas, this tower was used as a vantage point to spot incoming ships and is now a part of a hotel on the island. St. John is a very wealthy island which benefits from restrictive development laws, making it a highly exclusive destination within the Caribbean. For the well heeled traveler, this is the perfect destination. St. Croix is the largest of the U.S. Virgin islands and is home to several environmentally protected areas including the beautiful Green Cay National Wildlife Refuge as well as the Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge. Water Island was long used by the United States government for various testing programs. Although it is primarily a residential island, visitors may venture there for a more personalized U.S. Virgin Islands experience.

Beach Destination # 3: The Cayman Islands

Known as the most famous tax haven in the world, the Cayman Islands are also home to some of the most beautiful beaches and some of the most upscale accommodations within the Caribbean. One of the biggest draws is scuba diving, which is made possible by the impossibly clear waters that surround the island. A British Territory, the Cayman Islands include three islands: Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. Many cruise ships choose the Cayman Islands as a port of call, most commonly going into Grand Cayman. Grand Cayman is also home to the famous Seven Mile Beach. Topped by coral sand and bounded by many upscale resorts, this is a must-visit part of the island. If you visit the Cayman Islands, make time to visit the two smaller islands instead of just Grand Cayman. There are many beautiful attractions throughout this destination.

Beach Destination # 4: The Bahamas

Easily the most well-known destination in the Caribbean, the Bahamas are visited by millions of tourists every year and are also visited by cruise ships on a regular basis. The Bahamas truly caters to the tourist trade, with events organized throughout the region’s popular travel season, which lasts from December to April. Yet thanks to its temperate climate, you can visit the Bahamas at nearly any time of the year, however, and experience great weather and a terrific atmosphere. Whether you are looking for a couples-only resort, an all-inclusive resort, or a family-friendly time share, the Bahamas has cost-effective options to suit any need. Several hundred islands comprise the Bahamas, but only several are inhabited and used as tourist destinations. The popular destinations that you may consider include Grand Bahama, New Providence, and Harbour Island. Be prepared for adventure in the Bahamas as the pace can be fast and the variety of opportunities endless.

Regardless of the beach destination you choose, you are sure to find vibrant nightlife, shopping, dining, entertainment, golf and water sports to suit your personal tastes. Sample the local and international flavors unique to the cultures of the Caribbean. Whether you are looking for an action-packed vacation or secluded lazy days on the beach, there is a Caribbean beach vacation waiting for you!

Escape to Destin for Caribbean Beauty on the Mainland

No longer the hidden jewel of the Florida Panhandle, Destin has evolved into a full-blown tourist destination with its golf courses, upscale restaurants, high-rise condos and, of course, pristine beaches. While you will not find seclusion and quiet along this little strip of paradise, do not let that deter from exploring its stunning natural features and exciting attractions.

Although the beaches of Destin have been written about up to the tiniest detail, and most people feel that they know exactly what to expect, to see the sugar white sand and the emerald-green water in person is quite different than reading about them in an article. The surprise factor may be long gone, but the one-and-a-half mile long stretch of sand at Henderson Beach State Park is indescribably breathtaking upon first glance and is sure to leave you slightly bewildered if you have never seen such a pristine beach before. The white sand is almost too bright as the sunlight reflects off its surface, while the Gulf of Mexico will make you feel as if you are on a Caribbean island with the most crystal clear water at your beck and call.

After you have gotten over the initial surprise of the beach’s untamed beauty, you can explore, laugh, and play to your heart’s content. Swimming, sunbathing, surf fishing, and seabird watching are all popular activities in and around the water, but Henderson Beach State Park is more than just a place to work on your tan. Since you may get a little restless simply sitting on the beach for hours on end, you can head over to the nature trail to catch a glimpse of the area’s abundant wildlife and coastal dune ecosystem. The two large pavilions are also perfect for picnicking and grilling, meaning you don’t need to leave your sandy oasis should hunger strike.
