Close Up Photography, an Emotional Approach to Nature Photography

From wide open spaces to rugged mountains, rolling meadows to dramatic coastlines they all play an important part in the nature of landscape. However, with such a view it is often hard to appreciate the beauty because there is nowhere for the eye to settle and concentrate on.

Why not take a fresh approach to nature photography and concentrate on part of the view and take time to consider color, shape and texture to really appreciate the finer features of the scene.

Enter the world of close up photography that lies just beyond the familiar but so rich in detail and beauty. If we look through our close up lens with an open mind, imagination and childlike curiosity there are many close up photography opportunities for us to consider.

As nature photographers we can take this concept further, for example that distant bright yellow patch becomes on closer inspection a riotous stand of broom flowers. Closer still we see clearly the intricate detail in each flower and seedpod that we can record in our close up photography.

Paying for Camp

Many parents joke that they are going to have to take out a second mortgage to pay for college, but what about for overnight camps?  What are the costs and is it worth the benefit?  We help send our kids to college because we know that this investment will help them secure better-paying jobs and a brighter future.  For a camping experience, however, is it worth it?

For some of us, camp was one of the most cherished growth experiences in our childhood and we feel the gift of camp is one that we will bestow upon our kids no matter what the cost.  For those of us who did not grow up as campers, we have to decide what all the buzz is about and make a determination if we can afford it or not.

As a former camper, counselor and teen tour leader, I believe that camp is a priceless gift that you can give your child (of course, as long as you find the right fit).  Camp experiences pay off in all sorts of “emotional intelligence” dividends:  self-esteem; self-reliance; self-awareness; empathy; the ability to listen, cooperate and share; self-control; the ability to wait in line (delayed gratification).  Research shows that developing these skills leads to greater success in school and deeper and healthier relationships.  And these early, positive growth experiences are fairly good indicators about our success as adults.  So, now that you are convinced that camp is all it is cracked up to be, how much does it cost and how are you going to pay for it?

Best Travel Tip for Being Your Own Travel Agent

The other day I overheard a conversation between two women discussing their summer holiday plans. One was telling the other that she had gone to her local travel agent and asked for a cheap package holiday in Spain. The agent had quickly managed to find a holiday that suited and the lady booked it immediately.

The other woman said that she wished she could do the same but had been unable to find a travel agent who could help. Apparently, someone she knew recommended Northern Cyprus to her. The description of its climate, fabulous beaches, beautiful scenery and welcoming local people deeply appealed to her but she had been unable to find any travel agent offering package holidays there. The person who recommended Northern Cyprus to her explained how it was possible to book flights and accommodation online but she felt apprehensive about not going through a travel agent.

I was quite taken aback at hearing this admission of total dependency on travel agents and ignorance of Internet travel sites. After all, this was 2008 in the U.K. where traditional travel agents have long since been marginalised by online travel sites. Yet, as the conversation developed it became apparent that neither woman knew anything about what resources the Internet offers in this respect.

It got me thinking about how many other people there were around who need tips on organising travel online and when I got home I decided to write down the following seven steps for them.

Planning an event can be a major task. It is not easy keeping track of all the extra details when you already have your regular workload. For organizing corporate meetings and events, teambuilding, or incentive travel, hiring a Destination Management Company can be a more efficient alternative for ensuring a highly professional event and the best quality services for your company.

What is a Destination Management Company?

A Destination Management Company (or DMC) can eliminate your stress when it comes to organizing events such as corporate meetings, conventions, conferences, incentive travel, team building, tours, recreation, and transportation for traveling business groups. More and more businesses are realizing the benefits of using Destination Management Companies, with the broad range of services that they offer.

Destination Management Companies usually have their own particular specialty in the business such as corporate meetings, company events, team building, or weddings. It helps to ask possible Destination Management Companies how long they have been in the business or if they belong to any DMC organization. Clarify exactly how they will be involved in your event, too. Destination management companies usually remain behind the scenes while ensuring that everything runs smoothly and according to plan.

Why use a Destination Management Company?

  1. They find the perfect venue and suppliers to meet your goals and travel needs, from convention centers, to hotels, to transportation.
  2. They are experienced in organizing events for your company.
  3. They arrange venues for your events.
  4. They have special services which include: catering, dinner, and entertainment.
  5. They make hotel selections or reservations.
  6. They arrange transportation for your party to and from the airport.
  7. They provide travel coordination, management, guides, and hostesses.
  8. They coordinate VIP transfers.
  9. They arrange transportation such as limousine services or car rentals for your party wherever you need to go.
  10. And, of course, they can aways customize any event or occasion to fit your company’s needs.

Finding the Destination Management Company that perfectly fits your company’s needs is critical. Ask your colleagues about destination management companies they might recommend, get advice from hotels, or visit the Association of Destination Management Executives for a searchable member directory and other sites that offer destination management information.

Lastly, when choosing the right Destination Management Company for your event, select one that is experienced in your chosen destination. One that is based in the locale where your event will be held is much more knowledgeable about the resources available there.
